What an amazing Invention!!

Today the roads turned to rivers and I HAD to go out ... my washing had to be picked up and that meant I had to go out in the equivalent of a tropical storm. It was so heavy that the main 140 road was awash. in places up to a foot deep which when you consider it hadn't been raining that long is a hell of a lot of water in a short period of time. It does show why the kerbs at the sides of the roads are approx a foot and a half high and also why the pavements are 3 times as wide as normal UK pavements when a bus passes you are very grateful for that extra width.

So that brings me nicely to the point of the post what was the great invention !! You probably guessed but it is an Umbrella ! Who ever came up with the idea of a 8inch tube approx an inch and half across opening up into a device that would deflect 99% of the torrential downpour away from the body was a genius.
Now when you consider their initial use 4000 years ago in Egypt was to deflect the suns rays, the enterprising soul Jonathon Hanway, who realised they would be just as effective in deflecting the rain should have got a huge reward in the early 1800's. The very first Umbrella shop was James Smith & sons of London 1839 but the style I was using (collapsable)wasn't invented till around 1952...and nothing has been made to better it.
I was really grateful for it tonight.
So there you go todays post is educational, historical, functional and effective. Manyana.....(Hopefully in the dry)
