Colombians convinced of Mad Scotsman !

I am sure the locals in the area I live in think I am slightly LOCO ! Like this morning I go for the bus around the same time every day 6.35 each day I say good day to the security guy and we exchange limited pleasantries.. But this morning I went down in my usual sleevless style jacket and short sleeved shirt and he is sitting at his desk in a heavy coat and GLOVES !! I can see him looking at me wondering why this Mad Scotsman is going out with bare arms ! but to me the weather is actually quite pleasant. Except of course when it rains because when it rains here its like being in the shower. You get drenched in seconds, fortunately I havent been caught out in it yet but bound to happen soon. Something else I still can't get used to is the fact its daylight at 6.00 in the morning like a light bulb is switched on and its dark at 6.30 at night when the light is switched off - there is almost no dawn or dusk type lighting just an instant change.

Teaching on a wednesday is a bit hit an miss the 45 minute sessions meaning you really only end up with a small amount of teaching time and because the kids are literally on the move all the time they tend not to settle to easily. Thats not to say they are unruly just takes a little time to calm them down to get into working.

Since it is wednesday it is also meeting day it was quite amusing to see the Head Teacher asking for quiet from the mostly Colombian staff and trying to explain respect and how embarrassing it was to talk over him - funny its what I have been trying to say to my classes from day 1 here. Cultural differences are difficult to balance sometimes.

We have received our Acrylic today 10 A3 size sheets of each of 10 different colours plenty to cut up into suitable Acrylic clock designs BUT what we dont have is any way of bending the Acrylic as strip heaters / line benders dont exist. Diana has tasked the School Maintenance department with the project of creating a suitable unit - I will be very interested to see what they come up with.

Tomorrow is Secret Friend Day ! its tied into your Mentor class and my secret friend is a 15 year old male - WHAT the hell do you buy a 15 year old male... Again Diana came to my aid with the suggestion of a Baseball Cap so a fortune later (£2.90) we have one Nike baseball cap) Now I cannot guarantee its authenticity but it has the NIKE logo on it and maybe thats as close as it is. Looks ok though. (There was a minimum / maximum outlay and I am just inside the Max.) and if he doesn't like it he can use it to polish his desk - see multi purpose gift ideas and its not even Xmas.
