There is zero organization, zero obvious planning and what we have to do is a mystery. I decided to take things into my own hands and went and saw the boss and said I am opening up the technology room for kids who are not taking part in the families day. Good idea he says... I thought so too.
0730 Grade 8 start in Mentoria usually we have 5 classes averaging 23 per class today we have about 25 students tops. We set up 3 rooms one with music, one with a dvd and one for chatting. The movie room is packed the other rooms are empty.
09.00 Kids are released out into the wild, though there doesn't appear to be a lot on for them and most just wander about. I open up the technology room and one girl comes in to work on her Orthographic drawing for her project. After she leaves 2 come in to do some of their tangram. During this time I have been manufacturing the old stalwart CD Holder, Works out well and with the limited materials we have is actually OK.
The girls soon leave to wander round and I get 6 grade 8 girls in who want to play with wood. We look at all the projects I have laid out for them and they all settle on making a small box with a sliding top (Its the old Pencil case idea revamped a bit by Diana and easily adaptable. I explain what they need to do give a quick demonstration get them their wood and they all set off to work. This is great for me with just 6 kids in working I can wander round ensuring everyone is getting a nice finish and that everything is looking good. It takes from 12.00 through to 3 for them to finish, But the final outcome makes it worthwhile as they all go away with fully completed boxes just requiring painting or decorating. The girls are over the moon and I feel I have achieved something worthwhile as the 6 girls who worked through today are not the high flyer's in their classes and as such probably gained something really good from their efforts and achievement.
1530 The bell rings and I suddenly realize I didn't stop for lunch, that said one of the most satisfying days I have had.
On the way to the bus I see this young chap chilling in the tree... He seems happy enough.
Finally I have mentioned the electricity thing before but Health and Safety doesn't always turn out to be available. This was the Heath Robinson wiring for providing power from the Technology Office to the outside World with the cable running across the floor and out the window.
Tomorrow is Saturday and I have some priorities ... 1 I need a comfortable pair of shoes as my feet are killing me!!... 2 I need a hat with an all round brim I have been in agony this week through the severe sunburn I got to my neck.. My head survived nicely but my neck burned very badly... and that was through factor 24 sun block so I have now bought factor 50!! But being the gringo means having a gringo hat that protects the back of my neck as well as the front!... and 3 I have found out that the Del Boy Laptop can take 2gb of RAM so tomorrow I have 2 places possibly 3 I can think of that might stock memory. I also need to hand in my washing and get some jeans adjusted for length, and do some shopping for liquids so tomorrow could be a busy day. Updates Manyana
