Off the Beaten Track - 6 The Ostrich Farm
The final visit of the day was to an Ostrich farm. Ostrich farms developed after the scare of Mad Cow disease. Ostrich Meat is tender, has as much Omega 3 as fish and is leaner than cow meat. In colombia there are 12 Ostrich Farms, and in comparison to farming cows the returns are far better. Each Cow can only have 1 calf per year where an Ostrich can have 12 eggs. Ostriches can live to 70 years old. Every part of the ostrich !! and I mean every part can be used either in clothing, jewellery or food. The wastage from an Ostrich is about 1%. It therefore makes sense to farm them.
