Colombia is on Holiday from 8.00 its the celebration of the signing of their independance and through out Bogota there are celebrations and parties including fire works and events in the local parks.
Colombians in general are very friendly and although I would have loved to experience the events going on tonight in person its just not sensible, GRINGOs as all europeans, australasians and americans are known stand out in a crowd, partly because in most cases we are slightly taller but more from the paler skin and lighter hair colour. Being a GRINGO in this country automatically classes you as rich, though I hasten to add I don't think thats true. I might be a millionaire in terms of what I get paid but that doesn't mean it has the same buying power in UK as it does here. And thats the crux of it, anything we have, would easily feed many families and as such you have to be very careful about what you say and who you say it to.
One piece of advice I received on arrival is that you should only use taxi's that you order from a reputable source, and never take one off the street. Likewise once in the taxi you lock the rear doors, that way you don't find unwelcomed visitors joining you and taking you for what is termed the Millionaires Trip, where you are taken from cash machine to cash machine until your card is maxed out. As a general rule we have decided only to travel in pairs where possible. So for tonight I happily watch the festivities on my new cable ready TV while updating the web on my new Cable modem... Information is once again mine - what a relief.
